Un collegamento via Skype mi consente di spostarmi nel soggiorno di Giacomo Braccialarghe, Artist and Illustrator, nella West  Coast del Sud Africa.   – A Skype connection allows me to meet with Giacomo Braccialarghe, Artist and Illustrator, who’s living in the West Coast of South Africa.

Ad un certo punto della tua vita cosa ti ha spinto a partire per il Sud Africa, l’Italia ti stava stretta, i siti web potevi farli anche abitando lontano o eri in cerca di altre opportunità di lavoro? Chiedo a Giacomo Braccialarghe, fiorentino/sudafricano che vive in Sud Africa da diversi anni.  – I ask Giacomo Braccialarghe, a Florentine / South African who has been living in South Africa for several years. At a certain point in your life, what motivated you to leave for South Africa? Was Italy too congested for you? Could the web design job be done from anywhere in the world or were you simply looking for a different job opportunity and way of life?

“Praticamente mi hai tolto le parole di bocca, perché è proprio quello che è successo. C’è da dire che mio padre viveva già in Sud Africa, negli ultimi anni a Simon’s Town, prima di tornare a svolgere la sua attività di scultore  in Italia, nelle Marche. Simon’s Town è una cittadina posta all’estremo sud, sulla costa orientale della Penisola del Capo, il cui porto si affaccia sulla bellissima False Bay. Qui lo raggiunsi e mi stabilii per un lungo periodo. Adesso vivo nella West  Coast, ad ovest del  Sud Africa e qui, avendo comprato casa, presumo che resterò stanzialmente per almeno 15 o venti anni.” – “You basically read my mind! That’s exactly what happened. It must be said, that before returning to work as a sculptor in Italy, my father was living in Simon’s Town, South Africa. Simon’s Town is located on the most southern part of the Cape Peninsula. The harbour overlooks the beautiful False Bay. I came to visit and eventually settled for several years. I then moved to the West Coast where my wife and I bought a house and I plan to remain here for the next 15 to 20 years.”

Quale attività stai portando avanti in questi ultimi anni? Hai avuto difficoltà ad inserirti nel mondo del lavoro e come te la sei cavata con la lingua? – What’s the main activity you’ve been doing recently? Did you find it difficult to enter the work  field and how did you manage the language barrier?

“Ho vissuto in Sud Africa per oltre sei anni da piccolo, così l’inglese lo conoscevo e lo parlavo già. Poi, dopo tanti anni trascorsi in Italia l’ho dovuto un po’ rinfrescare, ma vivendoci non è stato difficile. – The first six years of my life I lived in South Africa, therefore I already understood and spoke English. Then, after so many years spent in Italy, I had to refresh it a bit, but living in South Africa amongst english speaking people made things easier.

Per il lavoro ho trovato molte più opportunità  e possibilità di ricominciare da zero che in Italia. In questo paese è possibile svegliarsi la mattina con un’idea, un progetto e cominciare da zero una  nuova attività senza grossi ostacoli e difficoltà. Almeno, così era fino a pochi anni fa. Adesso anche qui le cose stanno cominciando a cambiare. – Compare to Italy, in relation to the job, I found many more opportunities and possibilities to start from scratch. In this country you can wake up in the morning with an idea, a project, and start a new activity from scratch without great obstacles and difficulties. Although that was until a few years ago, then things started to change here too.“

Intoppi burocratici? partite iva da aprire? – In terms of  VAT numbers to register and other bureaucratic obstacles as such?

“No, anche qui esistono la burocrazia e le regole da rispettare come in Italia ma, come dicevo,  tutto è più semplice. Entro un certo livello di guadagno, se questo si assesta entro la soglia più bassa, puoi lavorare senza problemi, puoi aprire un’attività senza ostacoli. Ovviamente è necessario attenersi alle regole, come in tutti i paesi.” – “Also here in South Africa there is bureaucracy and rules to respect as in Italy but, as I said, everything is simpler. Depending on the profit margins, you can work without restrictions and start a small business. Obviously it is necessary to stick to the rules, as in all the other countries.”

Quindi si tratta di un paese dove tendenzialmente si vive bene, mi sembra di capire. – Therefore, as I understand, it’s a country where you tend to live well.

“Il Sud Africa è un paese dalle forti contraddizioni, un paese dove convivono gli opposti. Non scordiamoci che qui oltre la metà della popolazione è povera e vive al limite della sopravvivenza : una realtà difficile da accettare. – South Africa is a country with strong contradictions, a country where opposites live together. Let’s not forget that here over half of the population is poor and lives on the edge of survival: a reality that is difficult to accept.

Un turista inconsapevole può arrivare in aereo a Cape Town e divertirsi, avere un “great time”, come si dice da queste parti, fare un tour o un safari senza percepire minimamente quello che accade a pochi chilometri di distanza, senza capire qual’é la realtà vera del paese. Anche perché i canali ufficiali di informazione pubblicano e trasmettono essenzialmente gossip. – An unaware tourist can land in Cape Town and have fun, have a “great time”, as they say here. You can take a tour or a safari without perceiving in the least what is happening a few kilometres away, without understanding what is the true reality in the country. Also because the common public channels of information broadcast essentially daily news, so to speak.

Se invece cominci a spostarti, devi essere pronto ad  affrontare la vita reale che è fatta di ricchi e benestanti, ma anche di  estrema povertà e miseria. Se ad esempio da Cape Town vai verso Stellenbosch, che è una zona boschiva e classica tappa turistica, può capitarti di imbatterti inaspettatamente nelle township, sobborghi limitrofi ad aree metropolitane,  abitati esclusivamente da cittadini non-bianchi, e che sono niente di più che baraccopoli. – If instead you move off the tourist routes, you must be ready to face the real life that is made up of affluent and wealthy people as well as those in extreme poverty and misery. If,  for example, you go from Cape Town towards Stellenbosch, which is one of the classic tourist stops, you can come across the townships, suburbs bordering on metropolitan areas, inhabited exclusively by non-white citizens, which are nothing more than shanty towns.

Ci sono situazioni in cui da un lato della strada puoi ammirare una delle più suggestive baie del paese, come False Bay, dove puoi scorgere balene che solcano il mare e sull’altro lato della stessa strada scorgere ammassi di baracche, apparentemente disabitate, i cui abitanti sono andati a lavorare, o se ne stanno chiusi all’interno delle loro abitazioni, se così di possono definire. –  There are situations in which from one side of the road you can admire one of the most beautiful bays in the country, False Bay where you can see whales that cross the ocean and, at the same time, on the other side of the road there are heaps of shacks, a barren landscape, housing the poorest of the poor.”

Come è iniziata la tua carriera di artista, dove hai studiato? How did your career as an artist begin, where did you study?

“Come ti dicevo, l’arte l’ho un po’ respirata in casa con mio padre scultore. Poi a Firenze mi sono diplomato all’Istituto d’arte di Porta Romana, dove ho frequentato la sezione di  grafica e fotografia, pittura e disegno. – As I said, I’ve had a bit of art at home with my father, a sculptor. Then I attended  the curriculum of graphics and photography at the Art Institute of Porta Romana in Florence.”

Dopo la maturità, il primo vero lavoro è stato in tipografia, dove ho imparato le basi delle tecniche grafiche e il disegno, che a scuola erano stati appena accennati. E’ stata un’esperienza molto interessante e  stimolante che mi ha consentito di approfondire anche le tecniche di incisione. Siccome ero disposto a spostarmi, ho trovato lavoro a Fermo e in altre località, ma a Firenze non subito. Al di là del “dove” il lavoro é  sempre al primo posto. – Afterwards, my first job was in printing, where I learned the basics of graphic techniques. It was a very interesting and stimulating experience that allowed me to explore engraving techniques. Since I was willing to move, I found work in Fermo and other locations, but not immediately in Florence.

Tornato a Firenze ho cominciato l’attività di grafico,  portando sempre con me la passione per la pittura e la scultura. Mi considero un “Fine Graphic Artist” che combina la grafica alle belle arti. Passo dal disegno a mano alla digital art per finire con il dipingere su tela. Fin dagli anni ’90 ho svolto le attività di web designer ed illustratore di libri per bambini. Attualmente la mia attività principale si focalizza nell’illustrazione e nella pittura artistica. – Once back in Florence I started working as a graphic designer, always bringing with me my passion for painting and sculpture. I consider myself a “Fine Graphic Artist” who combines graphics with fine arts. I start from hand drawings passing to digital art, finishing by painting on canvas. Since the 90s I have worked as a web designer and illustrator of children’s books. Currently, my main activity focuses on illustration and artistic painting.

Cosa puoi dirci su ciò che esponi nella mostra online di StampToscana? – What can you tell us about what you exhibit in the StampToscana online exhibition?

“Si tratta di una selezione di opere grafiche e pittoriche raccolte in ordine cronologico. Una carrellata virtuale dal 1972 al oggi. – It is a selection of graphic and pictorial works collected in chronological order. A virtual overview from 1972 to today.”
